Our passage from 2 Peter 2 is probably not among the favorite Bible passages of many Christians. Peter's words are strong and even shocking. And what makes them even more shocking is that these words of rebuke and warning were written concerning people who called themselves followers of Christ. These words of rebuke and warning were written to churches and Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor. The heart of Peter's message to his readers and to us is: Beware of being led astray. The German leader, Otto Von Bismark, once said, “Fools profit by their own mistakes, I prefer to learn from the mistakes of others.” Certainly this passage is given in part so that we will not repeat the foolish mistakes that so many others have made. But Peter's words are not just an important lesson about those who have gone astray, but a reminder and warning to us that we have no right to be arrogant and think that we are too wise or too strong not to be tempted and led astray ourselves. The dangers we face are not identical to what Peter's readers were facing. But the same message is given to us. Beware of being led astray. We will consider this warning in four parts. 1) Beware of those who are arrogant (v. 10b-12); 2) Beware of those who are perverts (v. 13-16); 3) Beware of those who make big promises (v. 17-19); 4) Beware of thinking there is always a second chance. (v. 20-22)
