More Sermon Details:       Confusion of the worst kind prevailed in the church in Corinth. Worship of God was marred by disorder and chaos as proper structure and order had disintegrated under the pressures of sectarian strife and unabashed self-promotion. The only legitimate verdict to be passed on the whole matter is given, v23. The tragedy is that this is the view even of the heathen! What an indictment of the cause of God in this context that the ungodly had a more reasonable view of their behaviour than they had themselves! Not only does Paul deal with the perversion of the gift of tongues that was apparent in Corinth; regulate the correct use of the temporary supernatural gift of tongues; but he insists on the supremacy and permanence of preaching.
