The Five “Rests” of Hebrews 4 God’s rest on the 7th Day Israel’s rest in Canaan Israel’s rest in David’s time Our rest now (already) Our rest in glory (not yet)
Main Idea: Let us enter His rest!
• Let us fear let we should seem to have failed to reach His rest! The promise of entering His rest still stands! (1a) We need to fear that some among us may not reach it (1b) Good news came to us, as to the wilderness generation (2) They were not benefitted by that good news They did not believe that good news Israel in the wilderness (3) We who have believed have entered that rest (3a) Those in the wilderness did not believe They knew that God had rested on 7th day (Gen 2:2) (4) Israel in David’s time (Psalm 95) (5-8) They were tempted to not believe They were to consider the wilderness generation They had received good news But they failed to enter because of disobedience Joshua could not give them rest, as shown in David’s time Our rest now and later: the “already” and “not yet” (9-10) Future: There remains a Sabbath rest (9) Present: Whoever has entered God’s rest has rested (10)
• Let us strive to enter that rest! Believe the Gospel (3:19) Obey the Gospel (4:11)
