The occasion of our Lord speaking the parable before us simple. It addressed the false expectations of the disciples on the subject of Christ's kingdom. It was a prophetical sketch of things present and things to come, which ought to raise solemn thoughts in the minds of all professing Christians. Jesus is compared to the "man of noble birth [who] went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return." (v.12) Let us never forget the certainty of Jesus's return. We cherish the truth that He lived for us, and died for us, and rose again for us, and intercedes for us. But it is vital we know that He is soon coming again.
Our countless privileges as Christians are the “minas” given to us by Christ. One day we will be required to give an account of them. Consider these privileges (blessings) – the Word, our freedom, access to instruction, Spirit-illumined understanding, … We must consider the extent of our responsibility in the light of such blessing. To whom much is given, of them much will be required (Luke 12:48).
That which God has entrusted to us (even more than gold and silver) is to be employed diligently (v.13). We have been sent forth to preach the gospel, to bless and grow a church for Christ in the world, to bring the nations to the obedience of faith, and to build them up in it. This is done in the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Jesus commands us to mind our business, to set about it in good earnest, and to stick to it. We must not flag in our zeal to do good to the souls of men and gether them in to Christ.
