The first paper "The Reformation Cornerstone: Justification by Faith" was given by Pastor Roger Fay, Minister of Zion Evangelical Church, Ripon. It was based on Romans 3.9 - 4.9 and the subject was expounded in the following propositions. (1) Our great need is for righteousness as being the divine priority reflecting the beauty of holiness which is in God himself. (2) God's readiness to impart righteousness freely to those who believe in Jesus Christ, whose death atoned for sin in an objective legal transaction. (3) The believer's righteousness, which is not infused in us but is imputed to us as our sins were imputed to Christ whose death of propitiation appeased the wrath of God. (4) Justification takes place when sinners believe and not a second earlier. There is no eternal justification. (5) Human merit does not enter into our justification at all and believers can take no credit for their justification. (6) The Gospel is, therefore, the same for everybody for we are all guilty and by the cross God's holiness is upheld and his love is shown. (7) Only this forensic way brings joy, peace and blessedness as Wesley found in 1738 when he felt his heart "strangely warmed". (8) Justification by faith issues in good works as the root yields fruit and we have true confidence because of God's grace.
