Sadly, many Christians are not aware of spiritual danger and threat. The disciples were taught to pray the Lord's Prayer not simply for the purpose of ritual, but so that they would better understand the nature of physical and spiritual life. I believe that in teaching them the Lord's Prayer, Jesus was preparing them for their mission and for the time of testing that would come to them as Jesus went to the cross. None of the disciples were strong enough to face the test that came with Christ's death. They all failed and yet the eleven were restored and then later given the Holy Spirit so that they could accomplish their mission. We often assume rather than trust. We have far more confidence in our own plans sometimes than trust in the Lord's provision. Peter reminds us in this passage to not be arrogant or self-confident, but to consider the serious danger that we face. The heart of his message is: Trust in the Lord's deliverance knowing that he will judge all His enemies. The argument that Peter gives here in this text is given in two parts. If x is true, then how much more is y true. If God brought deliverance and judgment in the past, how much more will he continue to provide deliverance for his people today and judgment for His enemies. The first part of Peter's argument is given in verses 4-8. The second part of Peter's argument, is given in verses 9-10a.
