In the past, I've made the statement that you cannot have genuine, lasting peace in the absence of biblical truth. The best you can hope for is a truce.
17th c. Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza weighs in: 'Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice.' Well...he's close, but he's not grasping the source of all true peace.
Spinoza--far from being a Christian--was on to something, but like all who are brilliant but darkened, his statements have an element of truth and intelligence yet without complete accuracy.
True peace is an internal state. But it is one that can only be achieved by reconciliation with a holy, righteous God through our Savior Jesus Christ (cf Ro. 5:1). This is 'The Gospel of Peace' (Eph. 6:15).
