“The House Was Finished” (1 Kings 6:1-38)

In the fourth year the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid, in the month of Ziv. And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month, the house was finished in all its details and according to all its plans. So he was seven years in building it. (vs37-38)

Just like Jesus, Solomon finished the work that he started, and Christ shall FINISH building the temple, save all of His elect, and He shall bring all of God’s purpose to pass. He isn’t One to start something, and then because of challenges, say, “I cannot finish… I didn’t know what it would take, and I’m unable”, or any such thing. The Father gave Him a work from eternity past, and He did this work, redeeming God’s elect by His blood, laying down His life perfectly as the atonement for sin (Acts 20:28). He didn’t stumble at the task, but He endured the curse fully and triumphantly, crying out, “It is FINISHED” at the end (John 19:30). There isn’t one thing left undone, not one sin left to be atoned, and He will save all of His people EXACTLY as it is written (Heb 10:11-14). Thus, if we trust Him, then we may be assured that He will finish what He’s begun in us unto the end. Paul says, “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it”, and again, “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ” (1 Thess 5:24; Phil 1:6).

When sin abounds in us and we see weakness all about, it is comforting to know that our faith is in the Rock, and He cannot lie, fail, or do anything but succeed. He says, “Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you” (Is 46:4). You and I may be weak and sinful, but He’s mighty to save. We’re prone to wander, but He’s irrevocably attached us to His faithfulness! We fall into Satan’s traps, but Christ prays for us, makes intercession, and He’s the reason that we shall make it to the end. He told Peter, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren” (Luke 22:31-32). As we grow in grace, we grow in problems, and we see troubles that we never imagined, but there is always sufficiency in Him. It comforts me greatly to know that I’m not a failure. I’m a member of His body, the church, laboring to build His kingdom, and every believer shares in the perfection. Your own ministry may be tiny and insignificant to man, but you’re part of the grand and perfect work of Christ who calls out and comforts His sheep. Do not think, “I’m nothing”! In yourself, you are, but you’re a part of something that will be finished to the glory of God and your own good. You are not making a name for yourself, but your name has been made for you: sons of God. Don’t worry about the future. You’re going to succeed because your faith is in the Unfailing One who saves unto the end. Sin and Satan rage, the wrath of man will be against us, but when it is finished, we’ll look back and say, “The Son of God did exactly what He promised, and we succeeded because of Him”. You are a part of His greatness.

Finally, finish the work that you’re called to do, and don’t draw back because it’s hard. Life is no endless honeymoon in the gospel. Press on and know that you can be faithful, endure temptation, and you can hold out until end, believing God. The sin in front of you, the obstacles, and the falls… these are NOT the end. He will enable you to do all things, and He will finish the work of your salvation.
