“Carnal” (1 Cor 2-3:4)

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? (vs1-4)

It is possible to be saved and carnal at the same time: the church at Corinth proves this, and it is OFTEN the case. We think we’re great, but we show by our deeds that we are small, tiny, fleshly Christians.

Paul did not preach the gospel in the wisdom of words, but in the power of the Spirit, and he shows us that God is our only Teacher, so that we look to Him INSTEAD OF our preachers, praising Him, instead of our learning. He says, “that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Cor 2:5). Often, we think we know it all, but we’ve just gotten started, and looking to men proves our immaturity. You didn’t learn the gospel because you’re smart, and it wasn’t by the cleverness of your preacher. God GAVE it to you freely, giving you knowledge of the mystery of grace, so that you know that salvation is FREE from start to finish. He says, “But as it is written, ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him’. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God” (1 Cor 2:9-10). We earn nothing, deserve nothing, and we receive everything because Christ DIED so that God could give. Therefore, why glory in men? You don’t understand because your pastor is clever; it is because God put a word in his mouth, and He chose to give you life thereby. He says, ““Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but he Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God” (1 Cor 2:12). We esteem but never worship our leaders. We don’t look to how well we can say things, but to the Spirit, speaking the words that He gives us, as He opens our minds to the truth. He says, “These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual [people]” (vs13).

Corinth was carnal because they praised man too much. Like the blind man who saw men as trees, far greater than what we are, Christ lays hands on us a second time, so that we can see every man clearly. We read, “Then he put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly” (Mark 8:25). We are not here to praise men who obtain mercy, but to glorify the One who gives it. Carnality is common among young Christians, and teaching the truth corrects us and destroys it. Receive this message and examine yourself. Who gets the glory, not just a part, but all of it? Do you love all who preach Christ, or do you have favorites who make you feel superior, because you recognize their greatness?
