“So You Will Be My Disciples” (John 15:8)

“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” (vs8)

The test of discipleship is fruitfulness and obedience. By this, we know that we are saved, glorify the Father, and enjoy His presence. Jesus says, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to Him”, and, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him” (John 14:21, 23). Our fruitfulness is by prayer; it is NOT what we do ourselves; it is the result of believing Jesus loves us, trusting Him for cleansing, and going to the Father in His Perfect Name!

I was thinking today that I believe in Jesus Christ, which means that I put my trust in Him, not only for my past and forgiveness, but also for how I’m to live now… not only for the way to go, but also for strength to go there… not only as Lord, but also as my access to the Father. He is the Perfect Son, and He says, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7). Many false prophets promise things that God doesn’t, like if you say “Amen” and “like” their Facebook post, then God will bless you this year. They promise health, wealth, and success in finding a spouse. They promise prosperity and ease, if you have enough faith, but they LIE like dogs, promise carnal blessings faith, and pretend that godliness is a means of financial and earthly gain. Paul said these are “men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself” (1 Tim 6:5). Jesus is the true Prophet, however, and He promises that if we ask in His name – by His merit, His putting away sins, and His perfect obedience to God – then we shall be blessed with obedience, so we can glorify the Father and enjoy Him. This gives us assurance, and we go to the Provider in confidence knowing that He will be with us to do His will. The Father will meet our spiritual need and fulfill every promise of holiness.

Do not be misled by your own strength because it is a lie. Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5). Satan says, “You can do it, just try harder, pray better, and clean up your life”, but the Son declares us blessed freely because of His work and His faithfulness, and this anchors our soul! He said, “Arise, let us go from here”, went to the cross, and we know that He put away sins, earning our access to God (John 14:31). Therefore, peace is promised in obedience, as we keep looking to Christ, and then the Father and the Son thrill our hearts with assurance, boldness, and pleasure. Nothing is better than the Father’s presence– the joy, satisfaction, and ability to honor Him meets our every need! My deacon was married last week after years of waiting, and I still await my bride, but I’m utterly convinced that when God manifests Himself, we envy no one, love others fervently, and we delight to see others succeed. God’s presence is the remedy for all that ails us, and this comes by prayer and the reward of obedience. Believers know what it means to be thrilled, and this makes the wife, the home, and everything in life to be better; it calms our fears.

Do not think discipleship is a feeling. It is obedience. Do not judge yourself by head knowledge, resting content in words without deeds. Put faith into practice, abide in Jesus’ love, and do His will. Know that your Father won’t let you down, and know that you’re to ask for fruitfulness. You may request health and prosperity, but He has only promised obedience (3 John 2). Get this, and you’ll have peace: your fruit will prove that you are real. You are a doer, a disciple of Jesus the Lord, and not a hearer only.
