“Fear of the Jews” (John 7:1-27)

“However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews” (vs13).

Fear leads people to damnation because they’re more concerned about human opinion than the scriptures. They are bound by human traditions, not because they are true, but for FEAR of losing out on Grandma’s religion or what will happen if the truth is obeyed. But, it doesn’t matter what men think of you, because only God will say, “Heaven”, or, “Hell”, at the Judgment, and we don’t fear men because only Christ saves. Do you remember the man in John 5 who had been lame for 38 years? The Jews wanted him to disobey Jesus, but he honored the One who gave Him life, salvation, and the ability to walk with God. He said, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk” (John 5:11). This is wisdom. Man cannot heal the soul, he cannot make me right with God, and I don’t need to please men, because God alone gives peace. Human applause is VAIN and temporary.

Are you confused about Christ because of fear? Someone told me that I was telling the truth, but they’re going back to their religion, because they are scared. Their prayers were answered in false religion, and they don’t think that they can trust Him. How sad. False religion gives temporary comfort but destroys the soul! Do not be afraid of confessing Christ. He is the truth, saves as promised, and nothing else matters.

Secondly, why would you reject Christ? He says, “Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” What has He done to deserve your refusal? He is God’s Son, the Only Begotten. He lived perfectly, died for sinners, rose from the dead, reigns at the right hand of God, and He shall return to save His people and damn His foes. What about Him dishonors God? He says, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him”. He glorifies God’s holiness by His own obedience and blood. He glorifies grace by saving sinners and preaching mercies to hell-bound men who hate Him. He even showed patience with His own brothers who did not believe (vs5). He also teaches us to LOVE each other. What is wrong with Him? He had no property, gave to the poor, healed the sick, touched lepers, and raised the dead. What FAULT can you find in Him?

What other prophet or leader has made an atonement for sin, not only being an example but a Savior? Who else tamed the devil by perfect holiness, being BORN higher than the angels, the Son of God? Who’s showed more love, patience, and wisdom? Who else brought men to God and not Himself, making Himself the Mediator, but glorifying the Father always? Who else is the Creator and Judge? Who else rules the world? Jesus, more than Mohammed and Buddha, more than any other leader, has given a perfect revelation of God, fully showing off His attributes of holiness and grace. There is no reason to hate or reject Him, no reason to refuse the gospel.

It is true, He doesn’t promise health, wealth, and prosperity, but He gives salvation free of charge (1 Tim 6:1-5). He doesn’t allow us to sin, but He gives the joy of obedience. What is wrong with Him? He will save everyone who wants it, and He casts no one out, doing everything Himself. Why rebel against the Father’s exalted Son? He esteems Him above all things, and we are wise to obey Christ and trust Him, rather than despise and reject. We are fools for hating the ONE WAY to heaven, the Jesus who FULLY honored God and saves all who trust Him. Hatred is unreasonable and deadly. It will damn the soul, and there’s no excuse or reason for it.

Finally, unbelief, posing as knowledge blinded many of the Jews. They THOUGHT they knew Him, but they didn’t know Jesus or the scriptures (vs20-27). We read, “Now some of them from Jerusalem said, ‘Is this not He whom they seek to kill? But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ? However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” Judge righteous judgment! He says again, “I did one work, and you all marvel. Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” Do not rest upon superficial head knowledge and human opinion, but judge your relationship with God, and judge Jesus BY the scriptures. It isn’t enough to say, “I think”, or, “I feel”, or even, “Thus says the scriptures”, if we are wrong. We must really understand the meaning, asking God to teach us the message.

The Pharisees held the Sabbath very high, but they didn’t understand it pointed to Christ WORKING our salvation, because we’re sinful and can’t help ourselves. They ridiculed Him, but they didn’t keep the law, nor have you. We are justified by faith, not by working, because Christ’s WORK is sufficient to meet every need. His blood earns the mercies, not your efforts, and His Blood guarantees the Spirit’s power, enabling us to work by faith. Do you think that you know Jesus? He is the all-sufficient Savior, born in Bethlehem, come out of Egypt, from Nazareth, and ministering in Galilee. He died outside of Jerusalem according to the scriptures, and ignorance and false assumptions posing as truth won’t save. All the scriptures speak of Him, and when God teaches us, we believe. Jesus is the Christ, the Lamb slain, and He is the King greater than David, the Prophet like unto Moses, the High Priest, the City of Refuge, the mercy seat, and the One who reveals the promises. Jesus is God’s Son from eternity, and the scriptures reveal Him as all we need. Don’t be distracted by fear and false notions. Take Him seriously and believe.
