“Glorify God In This Matter” (1 Pet 4:12-5:14)

“If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter” (vs14-16).

Rejoice and glorify God when you are called to suffer for the gospel. Do not complain and count it a strange thing, “but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy”. He shall reward us and this is all that counts. He’s against our enemies, so what do we really have to fear? What does it matter if your wife and children hate you over the gospel or that you’re ridiculed for what you preach? They cannot kill the soul! Rejoice that He’s saved you, and rejoice in heaven to come.

Do not suffer because of sin in your life, as if you are a martyr, but make sure of your character. Let them hate you for your good works instead of your evil, and God will reward you with pleasure. Pity them, but do not walk around as if Christianity was meant to easy. Peter says, “do not think it strange concerning the fiery trail which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you”. If they hated Him – murdering Him on the cross – then they will hate you and despise your goodness. They don’t want to be under New Leadership and the government of Christ. It isn’t that man is ignorant; he is REBELLIOUS, but don’t let this distract you. Your reward is in heaven, enjoyed forever and ever, and it is given to all who persevere. Do not look for man’s approval. Look to God, and He will reward you as a “faithful Creator”.

Secondly, our reward is coming, so labor (1 Pet 5:1-4). Peter says, “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away”. We are not to serve ourselves on earth, but we’re to serve others for what only God can give us (Matt 6:1-4). Faith sees the invisible, and cease from human praise, when we bank on God. We WAIT for Him to reward us, rather than taking perishing treasures by enriching ourselves. We are FREE by the promised glory to labor for other’s souls, not in self-service, but as examples, doing God’s will. Grace enables us to look past what we can get out of people, and it sees what God will give if we serve faithfully. Today, I saw the baptism of my deacon’s daughter and rejoiced with the church. To see her, of her own, confess to loving Christ’s dominion in the comfort of His grace is worth more than preaching for numbers and applause.

Show yourselves as examples, O pastors! Preach the whole counsel and wait. You will have eternity to rejoice!

Finally, glory and honor belong to God and Christ for our salvation (vs5-14). We read, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” We hold on because He’s promised us glorification. He’s revealed Christ’s sufferings, and we see Him saving us, guaranteeing us HEAVEN to come. Now, labor and fight by faith: the devil cannot defeat your Savior. God is faithful, and we look upon Him to give us what conquers the world, grace that can never fail us. This true grace is unto holiness, endures suffering, and lives by faith in the rewarding King. Humble yourself. Peter says, “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” God will give grace, if you need it, grace to do it all.
