“Do It” (John 2:1-25)

“Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.” (vs4-5)

No matter what He says to us, no matter how we’ve been reproved previously, we must believe His goodness, and do it. We must not be held back by former sin. Jesus’ mother came to Him for wine, and He reproved her, revealing His authority over her, that she was His mother to be honored, but not someone to obey as a Man. The gospel makes nothing of Mary as having any special influence with God. She, like John the Baptist, isn’t the Christ, and she could not bind His will. Yet, when reproved, she still says, “Whatever He says to you, Do it”. She didn’t get discouraged! She knew something of His power, and by this miracle, He sanctifies wine and feasting in moderation.

He transforms the water AFTER we do what He says do. He takes the water of obedience and turns into the joyful wine of salvation, comfort, and victory! He turns suffering into fruitfulness, faith into love, and He turns our giving into praises from others to God! In all things, do what He says do, from the heart, and He will do what we cannot do, which is reward us. He will change prayer into a holy life, transform submission into peace, and He will turn your life laid down into something gloriously useful and helpful to others. Do what He says do and make no excuses! Believe on the Son of God, and He will give you Himself, the Gift of eternal life. Believe, and you will know God in assurance and safety.

Secondly, zeal caused the Son to cleanse the temple, and it causes us to worship God rightly (John 2:13-17). We read, “Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tales. And he said to those who sold doves, ‘Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!’ Then His disciples remember that it was written, ‘Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” He came into the world BURNING with God’s glory, burning to uphold the law, and burning to manifest truth unto men. He sent the moneychangers away because truth begins with the heart and not the wallet. He drove out their dead worship and established meaning by His resurrection, proving the Lamb and thereby the believer is accepted. He set up truth that must be preached, how God is in Christ and by Him we have the Father and prayer. He did this because He loved God more than human opinions, and He loves us more than His own life!

In this day, He still drives false religion out of His temple, removing those who shrink and change God’s word, rebuking those with anger who do not show the way. He uses church discipline, love, and the preaching of the truth to scatter darkness from us and to expose the way to heaven. Zeal caused Him to come, and zeal burns in us today, as we refuse to worship Him without faith, and we refuse anything that doesn’t scripturally honor the Son. The modern tongues movement, will-power religion, and faith without works are all driven away so that God may be glorified and sinners saved. We are zealous, even if men consider us too devoted and too serious. Zeal caused Christ to whip the transgressors, and it makes us worship on His terms.

Lastly, Jesus is the Son, and He needs no testimony from men (vs18-25). We read, “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man”. His resurrection proves His power, and unbelievers contribute nothing to Him, and their departure never hurts the church. Recently, a “big giver” labeled me a false prophet and departed, but I find no need to worry. The gospel needs no fruitless testimony, and God uses people who endure to the end. We see the risen Christ, and we declare Him as sent from God, not from human understanding but life-giving revelation. Never trust the gospel to unbelievers, and never seek its advancement by ANYTHING but the spiritual.
