“Through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet 3:18-4:11)

“There is also a picture which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.” (vs21-22)

Jesus proves by the resurrection that we are SAVED. Salvation isn’t looking at yourself; it is believing that what He accomplished, as proved by the resurrection, satisfied God. You are saved by trusting Him and leaning upon Him fully for your forgiveness and righteousness, which is promised to all who believe. Acts 13:39 says, “and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses”. He is risen to the right hand of God with power, even as Mordecai came from the presence of the king arrayed in glorious apparel, honored above all others, and proven to be the security and assurance of his people. We read, “So Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, with a great crown of gold and a garment of fine linen and purple; and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad” (Esther 8:15). Jesus is clothed with power over all creation. He is the sin bearer who shall return with salvation, He is the One that you may entrust with your life and soul, and He is the one who makes God’s promises hopeful instead of out of reach.

In the waters of baptism, confess your assurance and clean conscience with God. Confess that you are saved, have peace, and are an inheritor of the promises. Confess that He will save you to the end, because he is unfailing and powerful. All lesser beings are in subjection to Him.

Secondly, we confess Christ, but people speak evil of our self-control, as if we are too good, too religious, and somehow wrong for obeying God (1 Pet 4:1-6). We read, “For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles – when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of excess, speaking evil of you”. What foolishness is this? Are we unwise to give up drunkenness and overindulgence to spend eternity with God? Are we unwise for escaping the wrath to come for the reward of heaven? No, our cup runs over in obeying God, and we will not squander our souls for temporary sin. We have every reason to live for Him, because He will judge us soon. We read, “They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men n the flesh, but live according to God in the Spirit” (vs5-6).

Live God’s way now in holiness, and you will be saved. He gives power to obey, and we are not losing out in temperance, moderation, and thankfulness. We live as though we’ll be judged, and we shall escape it!

Finally, God’s glory in Christ, not our own fame and selfish ambition, is the for living (1 Pet 4:7-11). We read, “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the many sided grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” We minister our gifts unto others. God gives to us, and we give, graciously, and to His honor, unto people. Preachers don’t exalt themselves. They tremble, handle God’s word carefully, and they ONLY minister what He says, not to be seen but to show you Him. Believers use our gifts to give love and instruction, comfort and blessing, and in this, we maximize our own lives with meaningfulness. God blesses us to be a blessing, and the reward ONLY comes from living His way; it is the reward of obedience, not of pretense and selfish ambition, and it is eternal life to those who live by the resurrection on earth. Glory goes to Christ who did the work, and whatever we have, has been given to be given, just as freely as we have received it.
