“I Will Go My Way” (Song of Solomon 4:1-16)

Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrhAnd to the hill of frankincense. (vs6)

Christ tells us where He is, so that we can find Him. God’s grace leads us to the beauty of Christ, so that we can see this lovely Being who wants to fellowship with us. He is in the place of faith and prayer. Myrrh is the principal spice in the holy anointing oil, representing the blessing of the Spirit, so that He is wherever the Spirit is exalting Christ (Ex 30:22-33). And, the Lord is in the frankincense, which are the prayers of His people (Ex 30:34-38). Therefore, He’s found where He is EXALTED, and He’s found where He is ENTREATED, and by this, we can know God.

Where are you worshipping? Is He there? Where are your thoughts during the day and night? Is He there? Think upon Him as exalted at the right hand of God, sat down in honor of the Father, and picture Him bringing repentance to pass upon the earth while He waits to judge His foes. Think of Him as gracious, giving eternal life, and think of Him absolutely sovereign as He reigns in matchless power. Then, if this isn’t enough, He is found in prayer. Ask, seek, and knock (Matt 7:7-11)! Come to God in Jesus’ name confessing the blood He shed to be the reason for God to be good to you. His promises, His blood, and His power are a threefold chord that will not be broken. You will find Him.

If He didn’t want you to know the gospel, He wouldn’t have told it to you. He said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2). He would not bid you to Himself with tears and entreaties, nor would He send preachers and raise up churches in the world, unless He wanted people to hear the gospel. He describes us, His saints, as beautiful, so that we can be won by the love that He has for us. We see ourselves as sinful and vile, and yet He proclaims us to be beautiful and holy, because the eye that looks to Him, the breasts that feed others with knowledge, the lips that speak of grace while confessing sin, and the long hair of our submission all speak of the beauty that He sees in us, which He has given. He says, “Behold, you are fair, my love! Behold, you are fair! You have dove’s eyes behind your veil. Your hair is like a flock of goats, going down from Mount Gilead. Your teeth are like a flock of shorn sheep which have come up from the washing, every one of which bears twins, and none is barren among them. Your lips are like a strand of scarlet, and your mouth is lovely. Your temples behind your veil are like a piece of pomegranate. Your neck is like the tower of David, built for an armory, on which hang a thousand shields, all shields of mighty men”. He sees your faith working by love, and it is GLORIOUS, so that He gives you mercy (Luke 7:9-10). He bids us to Himself sincerely, because He loves us, and because He will be found.

Secondly, we’re safe and protected in Christ (vs7-15). He says, “A garden enclosed is my sister, my spouse, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed”. No amount of pleasure is worth hell, and if our fellowship in Christ wasn’t holiness producing and protected by God, then how could we sleep or rejoice? How could we live happily in danger? It is utter security that gives the bliss to God’s presence, the fact that you are doing good and enjoying holy pleasure. I sit here now at this café rejoicing in joy, thankful to be thankful, and utterly thrilled to be content with Christ. . This isn’t a “laugh now, but pay later” rejoicing. This is God given joy at the proclaimation that we are safe, forgiven, accepted, and protected from hell and Satan! This is the goodness of being in God’s hand and no one being able to pluck you out. Bless the Absolute Savior who cannot fail, who assures us that we will make it to the end, the One who quiets the storms, commands the devil, and the One who keeps every promise for EVERYONE who believe. Bless the Lord that you can sleep at night and rejoice amidst danger. You aren’t saved by a tiny fallible god, someone so weak as to let you perish, but you have grace to conquer sin and grace to cover all unrighteousness. You are not going to die. God has forgiven you, and He will give you heaven. It is as sure as His word, as sure as the resurrected Christ, and as sure as God’s power to make it happen. What God is this? He is the God of the Bible, our Lord Jesus Christ, and His joy is safe. Therefore, we can come to His protection and enjoy Him with clean consciences and ecstatic joy!

Finally, being won by His love, we give our all to Him (vs16). We read, “Awake, O north wind, and come, O south! Blow upon my garden, that its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits.” This is the constant order. The Master lovingly bids us to Himself, we come, and then, after tasting of His love and grace, we surrender our all to Him willingly, asking Him to take our love and our affection. We give Him our joy willingly. We do what we WANT to do, when we are following Christ in communion. It is good for us, and we know it.

Grace is a two way street. God gives it to us, and He makes sure that we are thankful (Luke 17:15-19). Grace is never the promoter of selfishness and sin. It never says, “Take my goodness and sin with it”. It always says, “Open to Me”, and then it blesses the one who opens with obedience. God’s grace makes God’s people say, “Rule me, love me, guide me, make me do Your will, and don’t let me go! Come and STAY, Lord Jesus. Enjoy the fruit of my love.” This is the grace that’s conquering you.
