“The Conclusion of the Whole Matter” (Eccl 12:9-14)

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.” (vs13-14)

Fearing God and doing His will is ALL that matters in this world: He has made it the whole duty of man. We are not to live as we see fit, as if our own ambitions are important, but we are here to please Him for He shall bring us into Judgment and to Him we must give account (Heb 4:13). Grace is the hope of sinner and saint: we can live this new life of obedience demanded by God’s power to help His children.

Many think the gospel forgives sin but leaves the sinner to live his own way, but this is not right. Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more” (John 8:11). There are consequences for sin because the just shall LIVE by faith. Faith isn’t a theory or a notion; it is a lifestyle. James says, “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:14-26). We live by faith in the forgiveness of sins, and we have faith in God’s power to make us obedient. Faith rests in God’s love through Jesus Christ, and He gives us, continually, what we don’t deserve. We are not to think, “I don’t have to obey”. Rather, we’re to believe that He will pardon and give us power, both.

Do you want to know what your life must be about and what to aim for every day? “Fear God and keep His commands (Eccl 12:13). We cannot escape as hypocrites, because whatever we do in secret shall be brought to light. Jesus says, “No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks to have will be taken from him” (Luke 8:16-18). There is no hope in overpowering God or taking His throne. We can obey or perish. Which do you choose? Will you fear God, or will you challenge Him and die in sin? Jesus said, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:23-24).

How you answer reveals your hope, and it shows where you are going. No one obeys as we should, but it is BETTER to fear, to fight sin daily, and to resist the flesh by the power of grace, than it is to give ourselves unto destruction. Do not be deceived by the words of men. Keep your mind on ONE THING only, because only one thing matters: fear God with the fear that leads to obedience. Believe the truth to be worked out in your life.
