“The Steadfastness of Your Faith” (Col 2:4-3:4)

“Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving”. (vs6-7)

Be thankful for Jesus Christ and continue your walk by faith. Never leave the hope of complete acceptance, and build upon the only foundation. Christ is all that you will need, and false prophets will try misleading you, but be STEADFAST and unmovable. The gospel leaves us thankful for what we have, so why leave the finished work of Christ and salvation by grace for some other righteousness? Why stop studying the Son of God, when there is no one else who shines like Him?

The devil deceives and tells people that Christ is a part but not the whole, that He is good but not EVERYTHING, and in this, they are snared. Be wise. Judge every sermon by Christ’s finished work, the believer’s complete acceptance in Him, and the hope of grace to all who believe only. The gospel isn’t Christ plus anything; it is Christ alone, exalted and magnified continually. You won’t outgrow the gospel. You’ll be misled if you leave His sufficiency and your perfection in Him.

The church is strengthened as Christ is exalted, because this is God’s way (Col 2:8-19)! We read, “So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.” We don’t build ourselves. The Father builds us by the Spirit as Christ is made known in His sufficiency. We obeyed in Him (vs11), died with Him (vs12), and we have been raised into newness of life and forgiveness because of His work only (vs13-15). We read, “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses”.

We are no longer under the law of Moses, because it pointed us to what Christ would fulfill on our behalf. We follow Him now as accepted sons, walking in love as commanded, and we are doing these things because Jesus is everything to us as He is to God. I was in false religion, legalistic dead Calvinism, before I heard the gospel. I talked about our righteousness being filthy rags, but I thought that confessing it amounted to something. I didn’t know that I was UNACCEPTABLE to God and had to be accepted entirely in Another Person. But now, Christ has revealed Himself, and there is no other message that saves or edifies the church. Take away the riches of Christ, and you’ve lost ALL of God’s saving power. The saving message that started you is the same message that saves you unto the end. It is Christ and the riches of His grace– the pure and perfect acceptance that leads to godliness – for all who simply believe.

Christ is EVERYTHING to us (Col 2:20-3:4). He says, “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” He is not a part of life or the most important part. He is our life! He is not the beginning of the gospel, but He is the singular object of every scripture for the rest of our lives (Luke 24:25-27). He is the fullness of God, our completion, and He is the reason that we live, plan, and labor.

Paul was not a one man show. All Christians, more or less fruitfully, are infatuated with the Son of God! He is no dead doctrine; He is the Object of our affection. We have a relationship with Him, we look to Him, and we long to be like Him. He is why we are kind to others, He is the goal of our life, and He is the One that we live to make known.

This honor is put upon Him by the Father, and Christ died so that we could live this way (Col 1:15-20). He’s given you life by His death, forgiveness by His resurrection, and He is the One that the Father demands us to hear (Matt 17:5-8). Christ is the worship of God.
