“I Will Hedge Up Your Way with Thorns” (Hosea 2:6-3:5)

“Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, and wall her in, so that she cannot find her paths. She will chase her lovers, but not overtake them; yes, she will seek them, but not find them. Then she will say, I will go and return to my first husband, for then it was better for me than now” (Hosea 2:6-7).

Irresistible love will not be conquered. He will now allow us to perish the whores of sin, but He redeems us and refuses our destruction. He wipes the smile of sin away and makes us bow the knee, willingly and gladly, binding us to Christ forever. We serve Him because it is the BEST thing for us. There no SELFLESSNESS in us, but we come to Christ because we need Him, knowing that He rewards every seeker’s diligence (Heb 11:6). We bow because we taste His goodness and know lasting pleasure.

Before, we didn’t know that He gave everything to us, so He destroys the pleasure of unbelief and gives us joy in God’s love, forgiveness, and grace. He binds our broken heart and kisses the wounds that His rod has caused us as the affliction for our sin. We thought sin was fun, but He takes away the pleasure, so that we return (vs8-9). He says, “For she did not know that I gave her grain, new wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold – which they prepared for Baal. Therefore I will return and take away My grain in its time and My new wine in its season, and will take back My wool and My linen, given to cover her nakedness”. He makes repentance a matter of life and death, and we choose life, because DEATH is certain. We can’t just grit our teeth and bear it. He makes us hate sin’s consequences, so that we can be saved from it, liking touching the fire, so that we refuse to be thrown in. He says, “Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall deliver her from My hand” (vs10).

False religion won’t save us (vs11-13). He says again, “I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, her Sabbaths – all her appointed feasts.” He demands a Mediator. We cannot trust ourselves or look to ourselves for anything. He proves that no amount of human will power can bring us peace. We rest in His love and the blood that He shed, or we perish. He’s determined to do everything. He says, “And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, of which she has said, ‘These are my wages that my lovers have given me.’ So I will make them a dessert, and the beast of the field shall eat them. I will punish her for the days of the Baals to which she burned incense. She decked herself with her earrings and jewelry, and went after her lovers; but Me she forgot,’ says the Lord”.

Someone else may rejoice in sin, but God’s wiped the smile from your face. Others may sleep well in rebellion, but you need Him. You’re convinced that one thing matters, and that is being RIGHT with God. The pig pen sticks and leaves you starving!

Love gives this HIGH HONOR of chastisement to the elect. He chose us, so our choosing sin does not fret Him. He sends trouble, but covenant love is unfailing to His people.

Secondly, He does speak peace to us, and He takes away the burden of sin (vs14)! He says, “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, will bring her into the dessert, and speak comfort to her. I will give her her vineyards from there, and the Valley of Trouble as a door of hope; she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, as in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt”. He will not afflict always, but He comforts, wipes away our sins, and He rejoices the heart that He’s broken. Bless His name. Believing on Christ brings the EXACT comfort that we need. He strengthens the lame, gives visions of Christ to the blind, and He gives joy and gladness WITH obedience. He says, “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Heb 12:11).

He holds no grudges because His forgiveness is always complete and total. Everyone who returns receives complete reconciliation, even if it takes time, tears, and continued changes for life. You will get joy and peace and terms of endearment will flow from your mouth. He says, “And it shall be, in that day’, says the Lord, ‘That you will call Me ‘My Husband’, and no longer call Me ‘My Master’, for I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals (false hope), and they shall be remembered by their name no more”. He is no longer an overbearing Lord: we LOVE Him for saving us from sin.

Peace makes us willing to be ruled (vs18). He says, “In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, with the birds of the air, and with the creeping things of the ground. Bow and sword of battle I will shatter from the earth, to make them like down safely”. Just as we couldn’t be happy without Him, now, possessing grace and salvation’s comfort, we are utterly content. The storm is quiet and PEACE rules within. He speaks to us the way that He rules the seas, saying, “Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:39). We are saved by blood atonement, so we know that our forgiveness is just with God. He says, “I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and justice, in lovingkindness and mercy; I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, and you shall know the Lord”. We follow Him in repentance and faith, and the result of His chastisement is utter devotion. He says, “So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver, and one and one-half homers of barley. And I said to her, ‘You shall stay with me many days; you shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a man –so, too, will I be toward you” (Hos 3:2-3). He blesses us with obedience.

Finally, knowing God’s grace is the end result of gospel repentance (vs21-23). He says, “It shall come to pass in that day that I will answer,’ says the Lord; ‘I will answer the heavens, and they shall answer the earth. The earth shall answer with grain, with new wine, and with oil; they shall answer Jezreel. Then I will sow her for Myself in the earth, and I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy; then I will say to those who were not My people, ‘You are My people!’ and they shall say, ‘You are my God!” He makes things better, so come to Him, and you’ll be your happiest! Nothing is higher or more fulfilling than salvation and the Savior who loves you. He gives peace that’s REAL, that’s holy, and that grows into heavenly bliss in its season.

Jezreel is His name for us. It means, “God sows”, plants, and harvests us, bringing forth fruit to His honor and our good. He is no wannabe savior, helpless beneath man’s will. No, He gives repentance and brings to pass His predestination (Rom 8:28-30). His elect will know His power, and we will obtain what He’s determined to give, which is salvation. Here is the hope: it is not up to us, but Him, and He loves sinners back to repentance. He says, “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go again, love a woman who is loved b a lover and is committing adultery, just like the love of the Lord for the children of Israel, who look to other gods and love the raisin cakes of the pagans… For the children of Israel shall abide many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, without ephod or teraphim. Afterward the child of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days” (Hos 3:1-5).
