“Your Love in the Spirit” (Col 1:1-20)

“We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.” (Col 1:3-8)

Believers have love in the Spirit. God’s given this to us by the shed blood of Christ revealed to faith; it is the outworking of His, so that we serve one another in love. EVERY believer has this, and by this gift, we’re marked our as His. Paul prayed for the saints as saints because he saw them loving, and he knew, as we do, this evidence of God. We are no longer in the flesh, but we walk in the Spirit, doing God’s will because He loves us with power. We are not slaves of sin as before, selfish and hateful, but we are gracious because we’ve seen the grace of God as it is in truth. He’s made us like Christ, and like Him, we love the church. The gospel forgives the sinner, and then gives him love for others, which leads them to God.

Secondly, forgiveness is in the blood of Jesus and what He’s done to save sinners (vs9-14). We read, “giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” It is not ours to make up for what we’ve done. In grace, Christ laid down His life an acceptable ransom and atonement. God laid upon Him the wrath because He laid upon Him the sin, and He suffered for God’s elect and removed our transgressions, so that we are clean. Sin is atoned by death, and the Son’s death was enough, so that God never will accept any other offering. We believe upon Him, but the Son did everything before we believed or were born. His blood paid, faith receives the payment, and it walks with God forever in Christ’s finished work. We are accepted, so be sure of it. No amount of tears can remove sin, only the death of God’s Son, and He’s done this perfectly already.

Finally, there is peace with God through the Son, and this is why He’s exalted to preeminence, the first place (vs15-20). We read, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.” He is the exact image of God, the Creator of all things, so that if the Invisible was held before a mirror, you’d see Jesus. He made all things for Himself, rose from the dead, and He is the head of the church as her Savior and Lord. The Father gave Him the first place because He is deserving and manifests the greatness of His glory. He is the One that we look to for everything, the subject of every sermon, the message of the bible, and the believer’s singular focus! There is no access to God except through Him, and the Spirit only works by making Him known.

The gospel declares that Jesus Christ is EVERYTHING, and we’ll enjoy peace in Him only. Receive this peace treaty between God and man, and it is in His Son. If we honor Him, then we please God. He says, “Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also” (1 John 2:23).
