“Be Diligent” (Prov 27:22-28:4)

Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, And attend to your herds; For riches are not forever, Nor does a crown endure to all generations.

We must be diligent. We cannot expect life to just work out for us, but we must prepare. If you leave a field unattended, it will grow weeds and thorns, because the world is cursed. God told Adam, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life” (Gen 3:17). Likewise, if you aren’t diligent about your soul, then you will perish. It doesn’t matter what you enjoyed yesterday, because the feelings don’t last forever, and yesterday’s looking to Christ will not protect you today. We must be about the Father’s business, taking personal and careful care of our behavior, seeking grace, and setting aside time for spiritual nourishment. We must, like athletes train our bodies, bringing them to subjection (1 Cor 9:24-27). We must TAKE CARE of our soul, rather than thinking that it will take care of itself without us.

Grace is no excuse for sloth. It forgives sins, but grace also makes us diligent; it never does only one or the other. Grace is needed daily, so seek the Lord and don’t just assume that He’ll be found. Do diligently, and your labors will be rewarded. Neglect your soul in sinful self-assurance, and you’ll see that seeking the Lord and actual faith are really commanded and needful, not mere options, if we choose. The Lord has directed us to work out our salvation, labor to enter into His rest, and ask, seek, and knock will all sincere commitment. He says, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him” (Luke 11:13)? He will give the Spirit, but those who assume will see their souls deteriorate and their walk with God become wobbly.

Secondly, the righteous, those who trust the Lord Jesus Christ, have boldness, confident access to God, and full assurance (Prov 28:1). We read, “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion”. We rely upon Him for salvation, so we are sure that we are saved because He is faithful and promises eternal life to ALL who believe upon Him, “for whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved” (Rom 10:13). Therefore, trust yourself to Christ and run to Him with your fears.

Fear is natural to humans and all of us have it. Shame came in the Garden when Adam sinned, and then he hid from God, running from His voice. “So he said, ‘I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself” (Gen 3:10). Now, we see the lingering effects of fear in mankind, as he vainly offers his best efforts and worthless sacrifices, hoping to appease God Almighty (Heb 2:14-15)! But, we have a more excellent Sacrifice and a Great High Priest who’s ascended into the heavens. Therefore, no matter how vile and depraved we are, we still have boldness by His blood and good hope through grace. We know that God is for us, even though the world is against us, and we know that sin paid for cannot separate us from the love of Christ, so we go to the Father in prayer, and we obtain fresh mercies to do His will.

I’ve lived the slavish fearful life, and I still tremble DAILY at circumstances and past failures, but I do have every right to boldness, so like you, I must take it. Instead of pulling my hair out and trembling in my boots, no matter the mess that I’ve made, I find complete assurance in the Son of God: even if my fears come to pass and disaster comes upon me because of my unfaithfulness, God will never leave nor forsake me, so I go forward. Be bold. You are justified by Christ, saved by grace, and you have His help assuredly. Even in the dark times, His light will rise upon you, because you are obedient to His command, which is to believe on the Son of God and love as He has taught us (1 John 3:23).

Do not fear. Fear is a part of life that must be conquered by receiving Christ’s love continually, and thereby knowing assuredly that unworthy sinners are safe in God’s arms, and He will never let us perish! If God is for you through Christ – having elected and predestined you, redeemed you by blood and called you by the gospel – and if you believe on Him, then your future is certain. Paul said, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us” (Rom 8:31)? The end result of every pain will be the soothing ointment of heaven. The help you need to continue in the faith, when you return to God’s love in Christ, will assuredly be given, and you will know how safe you are. So, renounce self-salvation and lean your entire soul upon God’s promises. He cannot fail, so neither can we. He has justified us, so who can condemn? Nothing shall ever separate us. Nothing shall defeat the believer!

Finally, we are not contentious people, but we do contend for the gospel, and there is a difference. A contentious person, because of pride of knowledge, seeks to exalt himself for his wisdom, persuasive powers, and abilities. A person who contends rightly has none of these things in mind! He follows the gospel by necessity, because it is God’s word, so he stands for it as part of his love for Christ and man (Prov 28:4). He says, “Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but such as keep the law contend with him”. He doesn’t contend to prove that he is right, but rather to show the clear way of salvation for God’s glory, in God’s spirit, so that others can be saved. He stands for truth, not because he is narrow minded and cruel, but because straight is the gate and narrow is the way, as defined by the Master who said, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it” (Matt 7:13).

One person recently told me that they love God their own way, and this is UNACCEPTABLE! You and I cannot love God on our terms any more than we can jump from a building, on our terms, and defy gravity. It is God’s way or hell, and we’ve chosen His way, so we rebuke sinners for their good, even though they are quick to berate us as bigoted. Don’t let this stop you. If you believe the gospel, then you’ll stand for it, and you’ll tell people the truth. Your relationship to God is supreme, and He’s the One that’s sent us to preach the gospel. We do not tell people that their beliefs are OK, but we bring them to a saving knowledge of God by His own word and teaching.

Will you be saved? Let me be crystal clear. It will be on God’s terms, period. There is no chance of your surviving before the Throne, saying, “I did it my way, God, and you better like it”. He will destroy you. But, if you admit yourself the sinner who’s willing to learn, then He’ll teach you! He says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt 11:29). There are some jobs that require no experience, and they will train you, paying you quite well if you meet the qualifications later. God’s gospel takes ignorant sinners who’ve played the harlot with false notions of God, and He not only trains you, but He also guarantees that you will make it, so long as you BELIEVE upon Him for who He is. Don’t change His holy character or saving grace, and glorify His Son. This is God’s way, and His church pleads that you will obey.
