“The Lamp of the Wicked Will Be Put Out” (Prov 24:15-34)

“Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the wicked; for there will be no prospect for the evil man; the lamp of the wicked will be put out” (vs19-20).

Continually, we’re taught to look to the future and plan ahead. Wisdom is knowing what your actions will bring upon you; it is knowing what is going to happen in the future, based upon what you’re doing today, and wisdom teaches us to live for eternity, rather than the passing pleasures of time. Even as Moses, “choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin” (Heb 11:25). All of us are lustful and wicked by nature, and we are prone to sin. Yet, it is BETTER to resist our sinful nature, than it is to “do what feels right” and perish forever.

Thankfully, God’s grace is for SINNERS who see that they can’t continue in their way. Initially, we don’t come to Christ because we love and adore Him. We come because He is the Only Savior, and then we love Him for saving us. Likewise, we continually come to Him because He is the One that keeps us from perishing, and this is wise thinking. Look to the future. Where do you want to be, in heaven or hell? The only way to heaven is by holiness, so trust the gospel for your past and present sin, and trust Christ for power to live uprightly. He will give you grace freely. He will give obedience to every person who fears Him, even to everyone who says, “It is better to obey than to perish”.

I’m not following Christ because it is easy or joyful. I follow Him because I must, and I thank God for the power and the peace.

Secondly, rebuking the wicked is hard, but it has a sure reward (Prov 24:23-25). He says, “These things also belong to the wise: It is not good to show partiality in judgment. He who says to the wicked, ‘You are righteous,’ Him the people will curse; nations will abhor him. But those who rebuke the wicked will have delight, and a good blessing will come upon them”. It is easy to tell people what they want to hear, speaking to the particular tastes of the crowd, but it is unwise to hold back the gospel truth. Unwarned people who are coddled in their sin will hate you one day. The lost wife will hate the unhelpful husband, children will hate their parents, and congregations will utterly abhor the prophets who deceived them. Yet, the rebuker, who is hated on earth and despised for telling the truth, he will be loved in the Day of Judgment. People who’ve received his instruction shall inherit eternal life.

It is not easy to tell people that their god is a lie, and they are lost in sin, going to hell. It isn’t easy to exhort people to live godly, when their whole inclination is to sin and be the boss of their own life. But, it is rewarding! The true prophet will enter Paradise, and his faithful preaching will follow him (Rev 14:13).

You and I are SAVIORS, sent by the Son of God to rescue sinners from perishing, even though the majority want nothing to do with us and will bite the hand that feeds them. It doesn’t matter. It is enough that we are faithful, and that God will use us to save His elect. Let us bear the burden of holiness today, because the reward of faithfulness outweighs whatever we suffer, “for our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor 4:17). You are more loving to tell a person they are wrong, and to help them see the light, than you are to applaud them and excuse sin. Choose faithfulness, and people will be glad they listened to you. Choose your own lusts for ease and glory, and you will be cursed false prophet, regretting it forever.

Finally, if we are not diligent, then we’ll lose our souls and weeds will sprout where fruit should be (Prov 24:30-34). He says, “I went by the field of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; and there it was, all overgrown with thorns; its surface was covered with nettles; its stone wall was broken down. When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction: a little sleep, a little slumber, and a little folding of the hands to rest; so shall your poverty come like a prowler, and your need like an armed man”. I’ve seen athletes, blessed by God with tremendous talent, and some have gone to the NFL, high in the draft, who were lazy and negligent. But, in spiritual things, it is impossible to inherit the kingdom without continued effort! We must give all diligence and care to our character, to persevering in the faith, and to making our election sure, or we will fall. If we don’t take our souls seriously as our NUMBER ONE priority, then we will lose our souls forever.

Let these words penetrate you. You will not be saved, unless you believe with ALL your heart. You will not make it to the end, unless you give this EVERYTHING that you have, daily, returning to Him continually for fresh strength. The gospel isn’t easy street; it is a labor, filled with dangers, cares, and things that must be conquered. Our natural coldness must be defeated. The cares of this world must submitted to Christ, so that nothing matters, except Him. Paul said, “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Cor 9:27). You will not make it by half-heartedly hearing the gospel, rejecting the fellowship of the saints, and having your heart full of the world. Trust Christ, first and foremost, and you will have eternal peace, if you continue in diligence and hope. If you give it all that you have, then you’ll enter Paradise assuredly. Peter says, “For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth. Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease” (2 Pet 1:12-15).
