“That You May Answer Words of Truth” (Prov 22:17-29)

Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, And apply your heart to my knowledge; For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; Let them all be fixed upon your lips, So that your trust may be in the Lord; I have instructed you today, even you. Have I not written to you excellent things Of counsels and knowledge, That I may make you know the certainty of the words of truth, That you may answer words of truth To those who send to you? (vs17-21)

The gospel comes to you, right now, so that you can receive it and live by it unto your salvation. God doesn’t want us to miss Christ, to neglect the day of mercy, and then to perish because we wouldn’t hear. He has an elect, but He bids all to Christ, even you, and He sincerely desires that you come and be saved. He says, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing” (Luke 13:34)!

He doesn’t want anything from you because everything is free, even newness of life, but do come to Him with your need. You are naturally cursed, estranged from God, and under condemnation and death. You can’t stay the way that you are, but repent and believe the gospel, receiving everlasting life (2 Kings 7:4). Do not let God’s mercies pass you by. Do not refuse to hear, or hear only, but practice what is preached, making the necessary changes in your life. James says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was” (James 1:22-24). Make sure that what you hear ends up in your life. God is drawing you near, and He doesn’t demand that we be better than we are. As sinners, let us take the mercies, and as failures, let us trust Him now, not allowing the past to stop us. Grace is for you, and He is calling you to the blessings as He casts out His word like seeds. Believe while you can, while the entreaty is near, and improve the gospel with good works, making your salvation sure.

Secondly, do not imitate sinners or follow the flesh of men (vs22-25). He says, “Make no friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man do not go, lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul”. The best of men have weaknesses, but would you follow Noah into drunkenness or David into adultery? Unbelieving men, on the other hand, are WRONG about the meaning of life, and they are never to be followed, not the psychologist or the vain philosopher. We follow Jesus, the apostle’s doctrine, and we do not follow men or practice their lies. We are devoted to Christ, and we do not share our affection with any other master, and this keeps us safe. God’s gospel guides us, not our neighbors opinions or influences. In fact, the ways of greed and selfishness are rejected for the way of peace. We are not swayed by the self-righteousness of men, but we lean on Christ only and always. The devil will allure you continually, and people will outnumber you in their sin, but stay among the saints and be encouraged in the good way, walk in it, and you will be safe, serving God. You are not to learn the ways of sinners, but be an example and reprove them.

Finally, if we are diligent, then we will be rewarded (vs26-29). He says, “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men”. We will not be disappointed in the end, if we serve God faithfully now. He will exalt us among kings, and we’ll have a crown. In fact, He will bless everyone who follows Christ and makes godliness our priority! You won’t get to heaven and find it overbooked, but your reward is sure. Therefore, be diligent, and you won’t fall. Peter says, “Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet 1:10-11).

Believe the promises, and you will endure. God assures us that living for Christ is not a gamble; it is an absolutely SURE way of salvation. You will reap what you’ve sown, so live for the promises in the confidence of receiving them. You will not believe in vain, but He will help every person who serves Him. He says, “He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor” (John 12:25-26). Give Him this time on earth, and you are CERTAIN for eternity in heaven.
