“The Plans of the Diligent” (Prov 21:2-13)

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty” (vs5).

Let us plan and prepare our way in Christ, getting ready to meet God. Don’t be haphazard about this, and try to “throw it together” at the last moment, but diligently prepare your way by good works and meet Him in peace. Do what you need to do, which is trust Christ, and get the holiness that you need. Then, you won’t lose your soul over sin. God’s grace will save you, if God’s grace is what you need and rely upon above all else for a safe passage.

Would you cross the street without looking? No? Then why on earth would we meet God for the eternal judgment without regarding His word and making sure that we line up with it? We would be wise to GET mercy now, so that we can spare ourselves misery later. If you want holiness by grace, then you’ll get it. If you come to Him saying, “Lord, save me from sin”, being warned of God like Noah, then He’ll give you the SAME grace that He gave Noah, so you can prepare. “And God said to Noah, ‘The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through tem; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood… And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark – you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you” (Gen 6:13-22).

You don’t have to earn or do anything in your strength. Everything is free, but GET it. I spoke to a saint recently who told me of her unsaved days, and how different she is. She mentioned being too lazy to go get some free money that someone had for her, and so it is with perishing sinners. The problem isn’t stinginess or hatred in God. The problem is that sinners love their sin and have no time for holiness. They put salvation on the backburner and then arrive at the Judgment, like the man in Matthew 22, UNPREPARED for the wedding feast. He didn’t have the proper garment, but don’t let this happen to you! Be clothed in Christ, righteous by faith, and make sure that you have the faith of God’s elect that’s unto godliness.

Prove your election before the Judgment, and hold nothing to chance. It won’t just “work out”, but if you plan and prepare with all your might, then it will (Jer 29:13). He won’t save you apart from your effort, the laying down your life, and God given obedience, but He will save you freely and graciously meet every need. Look to Christ, believe the gospel unto loving others, and you will live.

Secondly, it is better to have peace than anything else, the peace that comes from God (vs9). We read, “Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a house shared with a contentious woman”. There is no joy from God in contentious false religion, but He blesses the message of Christ and the blood that He shed. He blesses us with peace, and it is better to have Christ than anything else in the world. I’d rather, like my deacon told me tonight, have the Son of God, because when I have Him, nothing else matters or destroys the joy within. Bless the Master’s name and choose what pleases Him, and you’ll be more rewarded, than if you had everything, but God wasn’t with you.

Yes, it is wrong to marry a contentious woman. It is better to be single, live in a rented room, and sleep in peace. But, it is wrong to have our own way, if it means contention, so we choose to sacrifice certain things, maybe giving in to someone else, just so that we can have God’s smile, because surrendering our “rights” is better than sin. He says, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” (Rom 12:18). Yes, wickedness is quite a thing to fight, but isn’t it true that you choose Christ because of the displeasure and torment of sin? You prefer the gospel to wrath, so you choose godliness, even if it means that you must struggle, deny yourself, and appear strange. The peace is WELL WORTH it, so don’t be afraid to prioritize. We don’t need our every lust, and we don’t need anything that takes us off Christ. Better to have Him and nothing else, than to have everything, anger Him, and NEVER have peace.

Finally, if we want to obtain mercy, then let us be merciful (vs13). He says, “Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of he poor will also cry himself and not be heard”. We can’t be mean to people and love God at the same time. We cannot pray for His blessing, if we refuse to bless others! The husband can’t pray, if he doesn’t love his wife. He must come to Christ with her in mind, if he will get grace for his other needs. Scripture says, “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your payers may not be hindered” (1 Pet 3:7). Our relationship with God is manifested in our treatment of people: we aren’t earning salvation, but we are reflecting real faith by how we live.

Will you have peace? Then pity the poor. I know they are wrong, and sinners are without God and evil because of their own transgressions. Maybe, he’s offended you, and you are rightfully angry. Just remember God’s mercies towards you and forgive. This doesn’t mean that we coddle wickedness and tell people, “It’s OK”, and, “It’s not your fault”. But, we speak the truth in tenderness, considering ourselves, lest we also be tempted, lest God show how POOR we really are by the battle against Satan (Gal 6:1-2).

God hasn’t asked you to pay Him back, so much as pay it forward, showing mercy and love to others because He freely loves you. As we understand ourselves and the grace that saves us, we understand that we should be even more tender to sinners, because we’ve walked two miles in their shoes. Pity people, and God will pardon you quickly, because you’re looking to Christ in dealing with others, and He’s easily found in your own time of need. Show the same love, mercy, and grace to others that you have received. You cannot help God or pay Him back, but He is glorified by your sincere love to man, even as you love poor, destitute sinners who can’t pay you back, even pitying evil people who don’t know God.
