“He Who Keeps Understanding” (Prov 19:6-14)

“He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will find good” (vs8).

Doing God’s will, which is believing upon the Son, will work out well for us. If we seek the Lord, then He’ll be found, and if we trust the Lord Jesus Christ, then He will save us as promised. Wisdom and understanding is faith in Christ (2 Tim 3:14-17). It is walking by His love. I spoke to someone this week about starting out PERFECT. Yes, you read correctly. We are PERFECT in God’s sight, completely forgiven and justified (declared righteous for the blessings), simply by trusting Christ, and immediately upon faith. We don’t serve God to get peace and rewards. We serve Him because we have them, by the power of faith. We don’t earn salvation. We believe that He gave it to us, and then by faith, which is a good understanding, we’re empowered by Him to do good, rather than struggling on our own for merit and having no peace. The gospel, when obeyed and honored… when Christ is believed amidst the storms… will bring us good. It brings us to heaven’s bliss, and it gives peace on earth to men. God is faithful to work by Christ. Be sure that trusting Him in the home, with the kids, in the job, and everywhere, will work out right. You and I have one thing to do, and we know that it shall be well for us.

Secondly, I love to show mercy, and so do you, if you’re saved. Scripture says, “The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression” (Prov 19:11). God’s had mercy on you freely, and He continually comforts and forgives your sins. He helps you, instead of hating you, and He gives you all things freely, in spite of your sins. He earned and paid for your blessings with His own Son’s blood, and He passed over your transgressions, refusing to deal with you ungraciously. Micah 7:18 says, “Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage (God’s elect)? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy”. Now, having tasting this great goodness, do likewise. And, you will see the joy and pleasure of FORGIVING people and of doing them good, even though they are wrong to you.

You and I are wise to put on Christ in our conduct, because it proves that our election is real, and our faith is thereby fruitful. The gospel is thrilling because it produces peace, brings God to us in warmth of soul, and it gives us the JOY of being like Him, as we forgive sin. Paul writes, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do” (Col 3:14). I know it is hard to be sinned against, to have your heart hurt or reputation questioned, but the pleasure of forgiving sinners and praying for your foes is part of the joy of having Christ. It isn’t fun to be hurt, but it is precious and instructive to pass over it… to continue to be repeatedly gracious. We pray for our enemies, and we bless those who curse us because God is good, and we see the example. Peter says, “not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing” (1 Pet 3:9).

Let your wisdom be known, not only by what you say, but by what you do, which is love sinners and people who are wrong. This isn’t ignoring sin or placating it; it is loving sinners, knowing they are hell-bound without Christ, and it is the pleasure of doing good, which is what our Master commands us.

Finally, a prudent and good wife is from the Lord (Prov 19:13-14). We read, “A foolish son is the ruin of his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual irritation. Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.” You cannot make her love you, nor can you woo her in your own ingenuity and skill. She is God’s blessing to you. Just as He gave you Christ, He’s also given you this woman to love, respect, and care for you. “The Lord God said”, in the Garden of Eden, “’It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper for him” (Gen 2:18). She is His gift of love, because she helps you worship Christ in truth. She is like Eve to Adam, a helper, made for him by God, designed to do her husband good! She respects you and obeys you, even as Sarah called Abraham lord (1 Pet 3:4-6). She cares for your children, cleans your house, and she is the one that God’s given you to enjoy the marriage bed with. She keeps you from fornication. This good woman cannot be acquired by human will power, so stop seeking after her! Seek Him who gives her to you, honor God, and He will honor you as He sees fit.

This woman will be drawn by holiness, so you never compromise Christ to get her. You exalt Him, and as you’re serving Him, He will bring her to you. Scripture says, “Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But even if you do marry, you have not sinned” (1 Cor 7:27-28). Do not weary yourself looking for what must come from heaven. God will give it, and you can only mess it up.

She is good, so treat her good. Encourage her in obedience to Christ by your own example and wise submission to her wisdom. Be instructed by her influence, and be HAPPY that you have her. God gave her to you because He is good, and she reflects His love. He gave you what you don’t deserve, so He could make you happy and holy.
