Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 17:4

“A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.” Proverbs 17:4

“Shut the door; you’ll let all the flies in.” A door is a means of entry, exit, and serves as a barrier to unwanted intrusion. Notice in this passage how one open door leads to the intrusion of many sins. A wicked doer delights in evil, maybe just one small sin. That one sin leads to lying, which in turn leads to increased naughtiness. We see this progression illustrated in several Biblical figures. Saul’s arrogance led to disobedience, which led to lying, which led to defensiveness, which led to insane jealousy, which led to attempted murder of his loyal subject. David’s laziness led to lust, which led to adultery, which led to deceit, which led to murder, which led to his son’s death. Christ, on the other hand, is compared in John 10 to a door. In Christ, we find salvation, which leads to freedom, which leads to contentment, nourishment, and satisfaction. There are two lessons we must take from this thought:

  1. We do not have the ability to choose how far in sin we will go. The first step through the door of sin often leads down a path that we never intend to go. The only answer is to refuse the deceitful promise of the first step.
  2. We must see and trust Christ as being the only door. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Our understanding is flawed. It does not have the ability to see past the first few steps out of the door of sin. Therefore, trust and obedience is the only way.
