"Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad." Proverbs 12:25

The word heaviness in this text is translated anxiety in many other English versions of the Bible. If I could put this into more modern language, I would say: “An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a good word makes him glad”. In a world full of anxieties and pressures, aren’t you glad to know that the Bible doesn’t turn a blind eye to this subject? As a king, Solomon must have been well acquainted with pressures and anxieties on a regular basis. However, in his anxiety, he found that a good word, restored peace and rest to his heart. Most of the time, anxiety is something we experience when we are faced with a situation that seems impossible to manage or bear. Because of the magnitude of what we are facing, we roll the situation, as well as the possible outcomes, over in our mind again and again, in a vicious cycle that only produces bigger problems and scarier outcomes. Before we know it, we are obsessed and depressed with a reality that we have created for ourselves, that only exists in our imagination. It is at this point that we need a good to make us glad.

What do we need at this point? We need to encounter the good words of truth. We need to be reminded of the goodness of Jesus, who told us to cast all of our anxieties on Him, because He cares for us. We need to be reminded of our responsibility to trust in the goodness of God’s sovereignty and the sufficiency of His grace. We need to be reminded, that while we can’t do everything, God has called us to specific responsibilities in our lives that must not be neglected or replaced with pondering hypotheticals. What we need, is to have a fresh encounter with the living Word of God on a daily basis, that we might be washed and exposed in the light of truth. There is no substitute for this. Whether you have a heavy heart, or you want to minister a good word, both are equally dependent on the Word of God.
