This passage seems to refer to spontaneous reactions. On the one hand, everyone is happy to see a good man blessed. On the other hand, there is a sigh of relief at the death of a person. These emotions could not be more opposite. It is not that people just enjoy seeing a person die. Rather, the life of the wicked brings such heartache and difficulty to those around him that there is relief in his death. This passage forces us to look honestly at our own impact on those around us. Am I continually blessing those in my circle of influence just by my presence, or is my presence a continual discouragement? Our responsibility in life is not just to ourselves or those close to us. Our responsibility is to everyone we encounter, to be an encouragement, a blessing, so that when things go well for us, people genuinely rejoice.
