“Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.” Proverbs 9:4-6
Perhaps it will help us grasp what is contained in these verses by breaking them down in outline form:
Wisdom extends the invitation: “Come, eat of my bread…”
The promise: Life, and Understanding.
To whom is the invitation extended? The Simple –“silly, foolish;” the Ignorant
Do you resist being called foolish and ignorant?
Do you think this is an invitation to someone else because you are already wise?
Where do you think your wisdom comes from? Does it not solely come from God?
Do you acknowledge that daily you become foolish and ignorant if you don’t look to God for wisdom?
The command: Forsake foolishness; Go in the way of understanding
How does one forsake foolishness and go in the way of understanding? By eating wisdom’s bread.
What does it mean to eat wisdom’s bread?
Continual acknowledgment that I am foolish and ignorant without God.
Repentance from foolishness
Confession that Christ is the bread of life-“without me ye can do nothing”
Regularly asking God to supply you with wisdom
Seeking that wisdom from the principles of God’s word
Obeying the wisdom found in God’s word without COMPROMISE
