The Letter and the Spirit - Broadcast for February 21, 2013
A young soldier waited anxiously for a letter from his sweetheart. She wrote often but it was never enough. The feel of the paper, the fragrance of her perfume, the beauty of her writing only stirred more desire to see her. He loved the letters but he loved his sweetheart.
In John 5:47 we read: But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” (John 5:47 NKJV) Moses wrote down the law which pointed to Christ and he foretold of Christ as did the other prophets. The Law of Moses was held in high regard by the religious Jews of Jesus day, but they were more in love with the letter than they were with the one the letter was written about. Their strict adherence to the commands of the Scripture showed their love, but they didn't grasp the spiritual message in the very words they loved.
Jesus is the living Word! They had the written word but they didn’t apprehend Jesus because they were dead to spiritual truth. To know Christ you must first be raised from spiritual death. This is the work of God in you and as you are made alive and believe, then by His grace you are saved. Then God’s word becomes a love letter to you and of Christ, it becomes living and powerful and life changing.
