Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. (Psalm 127:1 NKJV)
Anything of permanence has to come from God because all we that can accomplish of ourselves is some temporary gain that will end in ashes. This is true in life, in business, in religion in all things. In Jeremiah 27:5 we read: ‘I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are on the ground, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and have given it to whom it seemed proper to Me. (Jeremiah 27:5 NKJV)
God is the maker of earth, man and beast and therefore can assign the use of land, man and beast to whom He pleases. In this prophetic verse, it is the king of Babylon who would rule the nations for a few decades and then God assigned it to others. This reassignment came about because of disobedience which cause a loss of blessing. The people praised God with their mouth but their hearts were far from Him and after much warning; all that they had built would be destroyed: the city, the temple, the commerce, the families; there would be great loss.
It reminds us that we must be building everything with the Lord; He has to be the master builder of our lives and of our possessions. If He is building and guarding there is security; if we take this upon ourselves there will only be loss and confusion. If the Lord builds the house, it will stand.
