I needed a new bicycle for my paper route and my dad arranged for a lay-away plan where I could bring in money each week until the bike was paid for. I had to wait until it was paid in full before I could ride my new bike. Finally I made the last payment. I excitedly rode off on my new bike and I loved it, until I saw a friend with a better bike. Suddenly I was unsatisfied with my hard earned purchase.

In Isaiah 55:2 we read:​Why do you spend money for what is not bread, ​​And your wages for what does not satisfy? ​​Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, ​​And let your soul delight itself in abundance. (NKJV)

How do you delight your soul in abundance? Paul wrote to the believers in Thessalonica: that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 NKJV

God gives us work with which we can meet to those basic needs of life, but it our way to want more and more and it is the wanting that can’t be satisfied. The remedy is to learn that: ...godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 1 Timothy 6:6b-8 NKJV. The way to contentment is to take in what is good and satisfying, that is the Word of God and in godliness to be content.
