God Helps Those.... - Radio Broadcast for November 7, 2012My second grade teacher said one day; "God helps those who help themselves." I thought she was quoting from the Bible and I adopted that motto as my own for many years. It was only after studying and teaching through the whole Bible that it finally came to me that this is not true. It is found no where in scripture.
In Jeremiah 17:5 we read” Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, ... NKJV
A person who trusts own strength will not prosper. The same if you trust in some other man or woman to be your strength. It may go well for a season but if you are not trusting the Lord, this warning in Jeremiah falls on you. The self made man or woman has departed from the Lord.“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. (Jeremiah 17:7, 8 NKJV)
So, trusting in the flesh is like a shrub trying to grow in a salt wilderness desert. If you trust in The Lord you will live secure: at peace, well watered and fruitful. It doesn't seem like a hard choice to me. God helps those who trust in Him.
