People don't mind talking about religion until you speak of a personal relationship with God. Most religions don't offer such a relationship and the religious don't really expect it. When you say that you can know God through His Son Jesus, it forces a choice that many don't want to make. In Jesus day the people were steeped in the traditions of their religion, expecting the messiah but misunderstanding the facts surrounding His coming. They trusted their traditions more than the scripture which clearly told of His coming.
In John 7:28-29 we read: Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.” NKJV
Jesus confronts their error directly- You know me and where I am from. Neither are a mystery. Further, He was not self appointed but sent by God, who is true. I know Him, I am from Him, He sent me; Jesus declares. This was the problem, the people didn't know God and therefore they did not recognize the One sent by God. Even then people were uncomfortable having to choose.
The Son of God, send by God, wants you to know of God's great love for you that if you believe in Him you will have everlasting life. Religion may make you uncomfortable, but receiving Christ will bring you into a personal relationship with God and will change your life forever.
