Don’t be Pressured - Radio Broadcast for October 1, 2012

Have you ever gone along to get along? I suppose there is a time for that but most of the time we are simply bowing to pressure when we should be acting in wisdom. In John 7:10-11 we read: But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?”

It was the autumn Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus was being pressured, by His unbelieving brothers, to go up to Jerusalem. To do mighty miracles so that the crowds of people would be in awe of Him. He told them to go, but that he was not yet going. Jesus’ life was being threatened by the Jewish leaders who jealously guarded their power and influence. They were waiting and watching for Jesus to appear and an entourage would have made their task easy.

Jesus went quietly, almost secretly and then stayed quiet for the first few days of the Feast. His absence was noted by the Jews who sought Him and asked; “Where is He?” The people also were wondering about Jesus, His name on all their lips. There is an important lesson for each of us: Not everyone needs to know everything about you or what you are doing. There is no need to put yourself in danger or allow yourself to be cast in a bad light just to please others. Jesus would appear and teach but He was wise in keeping Himself from unnecessary harm as He went. We too, should be as wise.

Don’t be pressured by others but be lead by the Spirit.
