Twenty one years ago I was walking around in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, looking for a currency exchange. The local shops only wanted rubles and all I had was dollars, only the correct currency would do. It was hard to navigate because I only speak English and they spoke Russian. Eventually I was directed to a place that could make the exchange.
In John 6:51 we read: I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
What currency is accepted for eternal life? What payment does God accept? What is the work that you can do? The answer is found in Jesus who is the Bread of Life. Jesus said: “If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.” But what did Jesus mean and how do we eat this bread?
The bread is Jesus body which He gave for the life of the world. His life was given as a sacrifice for sin. This is the only currency accepted by God, the death of His Son for the forgiveness of sin. When Jesus said that His flesh is the bread, He was speaking of His death on the cross.
How do you get this bread? You have to exchange your ineffective currency, good works and human effort, for the only currency accepted by God, the Bread of Heaven, Jesus Christ. We receive this bread by believing in Jesus and in His death and resurrection. As you believe you are partaking of the Bread of Life, taking Christ into your heart.
