My three year old granddaughter was playing with the computer and her fourteen year old cousin was telling her to stop, that she wasn’t supposed to do that; to which she sternly replied- “you’re not an adult.” The message was, you can’t tell me what to do.
In John 6:45 we read: It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.
The crowd surrounding Jesus was astounded with His claim to have come down from heaven, to be the Son of God, to be the bread of heaven that could give eternal life to those who have received Him. It was like telling a stubborn three year old what to do; few of them seemed to understand what Jesus was saying. Jesus quoted from Isaiah 54:13 making clear what God does and what man does in response. God teaches, man learns. God initiates by revealing truth and need, man responds by hearing, learning and obeying.
The work of man is to believe, but to believe what? It is to believe what God is saying. Jesus Christ is God’s last word concerning the forgiveness of sin and eternal life. God teaches, those who hear and learn come to Jesus. God said of Jesus: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!" (Mat. 17:5) Those who will listen and learn will come and have eternal life. This is the invitation, God is speaking, are you hearing and will you respond? If you will come to Jesus and receive Him, you will enter into life now and eternal life when Jesus raises us up at the last day.
