The Painted Posse

The Painted Posse is a group of rabid LSU Tiger’s fans who paint their bodies in the school’s colors to cheer and support the football team they love to stand behind. However, their passion for LSU is eclipsed by their passion for Jesus Christ. Besides the school colors painted over their frame, they paint the cross above their hearts. As devout Christians they wear the cross as a sign of their devotion for Jesus Christ.

In a recent picture that was emailed by LSU officials of the Painted Posse the cross was air-brushed out because the school did not want to appear to make religious or political statements. According to a report on “School spokesman Herb Vincent told the site the school altered the image to prevent other students from being offended by the weekly Geaux-Mail newsletter. ‘We don't want to imply we are making any religious or political statements, so we air-brushed it out,’ the school said in a statement. ‘Only one of the students, who didn't appreciate it, actually contacted us about it. So next time, we'll just choose a different photo.’"

Nonetheless, it can be argued that LSU did make an audacious statement with religious and political implications by altering the image of the Painted Posse’s cross. The removal of the image was LSU’s statement that the institution regards the modern philosophy that preaches tolerance towards all faiths and that all religious ideas are of equal value. The one exception where tolerance is disregarded or rejected by those who advocate tolerance for all faiths is toward the Christian doctrine that salvation is exclusively in Christ: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

Was LSU offending the Posse and Christians by erasing the cross? Posse member Cameron Cooke told, “I was a bit surprised, because our pictures get used so frequently, and the cross had never been edited before. “The cross painting is important to me because it represents who I am as a Christ follower.

Whether you agree or disagree with the means that the fans attempted to demonstrate their faith through by painting the image of the cross above their hearts, you must agree that our society is becoming increasingly intolerant towards the claims of Christ and the doctrine of the exclusivity of salvation in Jesus Christ alone.

Should Christians be surprised at the heightened opposition they are experiencing? Not if you read in God’s word where the cross has always been offensive to the carnal mind:

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:18-24).
