A man sat anxiously in the surgeon’s office waiting for a consultation on an operation. The doctor walked into the room, and the patient couldn’t help but notice Band-Aids® all over the doctor’s face. The doctor noticed the man’s surprise and said, “Don’t worry about my face. I nicked myself several times while shaving this morning.”

If I were that man, I would be out of there. If a doctor can’t shave without cutting himself, how in the world can he operate on me with precision? Precision on an operating table is very important, but it has little importance when compared to precision when sharing the gospel.

If the gospel is the most important message to mankind, then we must learn to be precise when we give it. This may seem obvious, but it is amazing how many people get the gospel wrong. They may get it wrong because of inattention, carelessness, or inaccuracy.

An evangelist once told me that I was too picky about the gospel. He said that the Holy Spirit would “fix” anything we said that was inaccurate. I was blown away by his attitude. We need to be interested in sharing the gospel with the precision and skill of a smooth shaven surgeon.
