A Thought From the Word

To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.” Titus 1:4

Paul here refers to Jesus Christ as our Savior. In verse 3, he mentioned God the Father as “our Savior.” God is Creator and King, the Sovereign Governor of everything and everybody. He is holy and just and pure and spotless. He is also the only Savior.

To save is to deliver, rescue, protect, and heal. What does God save His people from? He may and sometimes does deliver us from sickness in this life or financial burdens or relationship problems or physical dangers. But, His ultimate saving is saving us from our sins. Our sins. Yes, contrary to modernistic, humanistic thinking human beings, every one of us, are sinners. That means we have violated the standard of a Holy God. Man cannot save himself from sins, only Jesus Christ our Savior can.

Through His substitutionary death on the Cross, Jesus saved every one of His chosen ones from the penalty of sin. That is, before God’s bar of justice, all of these stand innocent, sinless. In our lives now, through the power of the Cross, we are saved from the power of sin. That is, though we fight and struggle and fail every day, we are saved from slavery and bondage to sin. One day, when Christ returns and ushers in the consummation of all things, we will be saved from the very presence of sin! Do you need saving of any kind today? Look to God…the Savior!
