How the NT Describes the Return of Christ
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 05, 2012

The New Testament speaks of the return of Christ with 5 different words, revealing the various aspects of His coming. In his commentary on 1 Peter, Paige Patterson provides a glorious description of how the various viewpoints come together as one complete portrait of the Savior’s return.

Erchomai is the general word for “coming.”

Epiphaneia means “glorious display.”

Parousia means “presence.”

Apokalupsis means “to unveil.”

Phaneroo means “to disclose” or “to make manifest.”

Notably absent from this terminology is the frequently used modern phrase “second coming.” This phrase is never employed in the Scriptures. The closest approximation to it is found in Hebrews 9:28, which says that Christ will appear “a second time.” Because of Theophanies or Christophanies, it is best to speak of the “incarnation” of Christ rather than of His “first coming.” Likewise, it is best to speak of His “return” rather than of His “second coming.” The words used in the New Testament to describe this event show that Christ will “come” (erchomai) just as before to be “present” (parousia) with us. This will constitute a “disclosure” (phaneroo) of His glory and a “revelation” (apokalupsis) of His person which will be a dazzling “display” (epiphaneia) of heavenly power and splendor.

-A Pilgrim Priesthood. By Paige Patterson. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982. (p.183)

Amen! Truly, as 2 Thess 1:10 says, Jesus will return “to be marveled at among all who have believed!”
