And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. – Acts 2:47b
One way our confession of Christ is shown is through actively belonging to a biblically healthy church. I use those words intentionally. There is a component in our hearts whereby we feel like God made us a part of a local body of believers. I didn’t just join up because it suited my fancy. Listen, if you join any church because it suited you, then you need to get out. There needs to be a part of you that is under compulsion that God added you to His church. It is not something you can sever. It is not something you can terminate, because you didn’t start it. The last sentence of Acts 2:47 says, “The Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
Why is there a good number of active church members who are on their third, fourth, and fifth different church? The reason why is because the Lord hasn’t added them anywhere. They just keep picking a church. God changes your life, and by the power of the Holy Spirit He gives you a new heart and new desires and new convictions. He shows you where you belong. He places you there through thick and through thin, through good times and through bad times, when the numbers are up and when the numbers are down, when it’s fun and exciting and when it’s commitment through drudgery.
Be a man with a backbone like a saw log who says this is where God has put your family and this is where God is going keep you. If you will act like a man, your wife and children will follow. It doesn’t matter what the other Baptists in town say about your church membership. It doesn’t matter that the guys at the factory tease you about where you go to church. You are confessing your Christ by actively belonging to a church that is striving to be true to Christ and biblical in faith and practice.
I love the word of God! At the age of 19, God saved me and I didn’t know anything. But when I came to this church and the pastor preached verse by verse, I knew God put me here! I didn’t always like everything. Sometimes I was convicted. Sometimes I was troubled. Sometimes I was frustrated. But God put me here. And He has kept me here for 33+ years!
