A scam of distinction: Presidential Who's Who

I have been scammed by a scam of distinction, the prestigious sounding "Presidential Who's Who" which is only available to "those who have reached a distinguished level of success in their chosen profession". Apparently they don't know I have chosen to lampoon these scams in my blog; since my blog post doing this has become the most successful blog post I've ever done, I have reached a distinguished level.

MarkAnthony McGuiness, who says he is the chief operating officer (hint to scammers: those are the people who manage the physical plant and budgets, not the ones who send customer-facing e-mails) with a strange-looking "camel case" name, must like the humble comma, because he writes: "Presidential Who's Who, each year, recognizes and selects key executives, professionals and organizations in all disciplines and industries for outstanding business and professional achievements." I guess a copy editor to turn that into a readable sentence wasn't in the budget for the Who's Who. I hope, with their biography of me, that they don't, anyhow, use so many commas.

"As a reminder, Presidential Who's Who is pleased to inform you that there are no fees or dues to be included in the publication." Couple of things: (1) this is a scam, they want you to buy a copy of their Who's Who, and (2) I have not given them permission to include me at all, and any such inclusion would be about the same as an unauthorized biography. Since they only know I have "reached a distinguished level of success in their chosen profession" and don't know what level I've reached or what my profession is, I imagine the bio will be light on details. ("Mr. McMahan, according to sources who wish to remain anonymous, is said to have reached a distinguished level in his chosen profession. We are unable to confirm what, exactly, that profession is. Mr. McMahan did not respond to repeated e-mails for comment.")

In a final self-congratulatory spasm, McGuiness concludes: "On behalf of the CEO and our esteemed staff" I am glad his staff is esteemed, but I don't see what that has to do with me. Anyhow, "we wish you continued success" and as long as I get these e-mails, I guess success is guaranteed for my blog!

I'm tired of reading comments about Who's Who being a scam. Who ever posts things like that obviously doesn't have a clue. I have been in Who's Who in College and now im listed in several as a professional. It's not a scam. It's what you make of it

I am reading all these blogs about "The Presidential Who's Who scam". I am actually a member of the publication. I and am very happy as a member. If you google any Who's Who's (there are several),it is always followed by "scam".The same is true for most anything you search. After speaking with some colleagues I was told that not everyone is included as a member, and the blogs you see are probably competitors or individuals with nothing better to do. It is also possible that they were DENIED entry after the interview with the editors. How can these books be selling on Amazon? Common guys. What a bitter world we live in.
Good Luck

I am soo... honored.

I am new at my esteemed job and it's location and am so impressed that my info was reviewed. So what exactly was reviewed? If so, why am I having to write it all down?
This is better named as the who's who if the gullible.

good blog

I just got of the phone with "Joe Dunn" who claimed he was the senior editor of Presidential Whos who. I kinda figured this was a scam but thought some free publicity might be worth it so I took the 15minute interview (where after I had been "selected" he still needed to ask me who and what Clear Channel Radio was lol)...

Wanted $800+ or $600+ for a plaque and some other garbage. I said none of that interested me so he tried to get me to buy $200 internet directory option.

I said I would check it out later and then decide which he would not let me off the phone to do so. Joe did have a website for me to look at while on the phone (probably because he didn't want me to google it).

TOTAL SCAM.

Got one rolling in today, which my Barracuda dutifully marked with the requisite "Spam?" tag (good to know my Bayesian filter is tuned ). Spelling and punctuation have improved this time, but Google Street View shows the same slum (134 Rockaway Ave Valley Stream, NY 11590, USA).

They are still at it; I received the same scam today, though I've gotten it before and just assumed...

Great blog; very helpful--thanks!
