It is eye opening at times to be reminded of somethings appropriate use. Lemuel’s mother tells him that drunkenness is appropriate for those who are about to die, and those who are in bitter distress and misery. Drunkenness allows the individual under these extreme circumstances some relief from reality for a while. For those who do not know God, many times the only way to deal with reality, is to escape it through a drunken stupor. This is never the case for a Christian. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We do not resort to the destructive influence of substance abuse; we run to our savior and seek the help, comfort, and strength we need from him. Drunkenness is never appropriate for the Christian, because God’s grace is sufficient for every trial and season of life.
