ASSURANCE FOUND ONLY IN CHRIST
"I am not satisfied with my faith," says one. No, of course you aren’t; nor will you ever be; at least, I hope not! The Bible does not say, "Therefore, being SATISFIED with our faith, we have peace with God;" it says, "being JUSTIFIED by faith, we have peace with God." "I am not satisfied with my repentance." That is wonderful! What would you do with your repentance if you were satisfied with it? Would you bring it to God instead of the blood? Oh, what pride and self-righteousness must be in any person who is satisfied with his repentance and faith! That person could never find true peace, for such a refuge of lies must fall.
"I am not satisfied with my love." What? Did you expect, on this earth, to be satisfied with any grace found in you? Was it your love for Christ or His love for you that gave you peace at first? There is but one thing with which Almighty God is satisfied--entirely satisfied--and that is the person and work of His Son. It is with Christ that we must be satisfied, not with ourselves nor anything about us! When we cease from our labors and ALL of our righteousnesses and enter into His rest, pardon and peace will come without delay.
God has given us the Gospel not merely for the purpose of securing us life hereafter, but of making us sure of this life even now. It is a true and sure Gospel; so that he who believes it is made sure of being saved. If it could not make us sure, it would make us miserable; for to be told of such a salvation and such a glory, and yet be kept in doubt as to whether they be ours or not, must render us truly wretched. --Horatius Bonar ******
CHRIST IS ALL
Every child of God realizes that without Christ, he is nothing. Christ is our peace, our hope, our joy, our preservation, our life, our wisdom, our sanctification, our righteousness and our redemption; He is our all. Should He forsake us or withdraw His presence from us (something that can never happen), we would again be lost, dead and absolutely unacceptable to a holy God. The fact of the matter is that we are totally dependent upon the blessed Savior for everything. Our eternal safety does not hinge upon our feeble hold of faith upon Him (though we do believe and rely on Him), but upon His almighty grasp of us. And if we ever become too self-confident and "think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think" (Romans 12:3), may the Lord remind us that if He should ever release us from the omnipotent embrace of His grace, we would immediately revert back to unbelief, dead works of religion and self-righteousness. We would be like the dog that is "turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire" (2 Peter 2:22). Paul’s words are true of us all, "For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing" (Romans 7:18). Christ is all! –Pastor Jim Byrd *****
YOUR FUTURE DEPENDS ON...
I passed a church sign recently that read: "Your Future Depends on How You Live Today." My first thought was how that this statement pretty much sums up the message of false religion in our day. The truth is far different! How Christ lived and much more, how He died, is what our future depends on! Salvation is totally in His work and not our works. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy HE saved us" (Titus 3:5). --Pastor Gary Shepard *****
