"Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches." Proverbs 24:3-4

Yesterday, we saw that this passage gives us a threefold progression for building our lives. Today, we will see the corresponding means that are necessary for building a permanent, stable, and full life. The proverb begins by saying - Through wisdom is an house built. Wisdom in this passage is referring to a manner of thinking and attitude concerning life’s experiences. A life course is gaining permanency, when an individual is learning to think through situations, seeing them for what they really are, rather than being carried away with the experience. This individual has made a habit of filtering his circumstances through God’s Word. The Word which he has built his life around is eternal, and so, the permanence of his life patterns, are reflecting the nature of the Word that he is relying on. The second section of our passage says – by understanding it is established. To have understanding, is to be able to use knowledge skillfully. This is often times called having insight or discernment. It may seem strange to think of understanding as a skill. Many people think of discernment as a passive intuition, kind of the equivalent of listening to your gut. This is not a Biblical idea of discernment; according to Hebrews 5:14, the ability to use knowledge skillfully comes with practice. The third section of our passage says – And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled. Knowledge is simply gaining information. The particular kind of knowledge that is spoken of here is Biblical knowledge, or the knowledge of God. Individuals, who are pursuing knowledge, and then growing so they can use it skillfully; are filling their lives with spiritual riches. They are pursuing and walking in fellowship with Christ, and they are living life abundantly.
