Zechariah 12:10-14
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son , and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. ‘inhabitants of Jerusalem’ Romans 9:6,7 John 19:36,37
1. He produces in the redeemed sinner cries (supplications) unto God for mercy in confession of his/her lost, sinful estate.
2. He gives the redeemed sinner faith to look upon the Crucified One (they shall look upon ME whom they have pierced). Note that God is speaking these words, and yet described as the One whom they have pierced. It is a clear declaration that the LORD Jesus crucified was none other than God in the flesh, John 1:14 Acts 20:28.
3. He grants the redeemed sinner a heart of repentance toward God, even faith in the LORD Jesus (Acts 20:28) described here as mourning for HIM. Literally ‘to wail or lament, ‘As one mourneth for HIS only Son…’for HIS Firstborn,’ "the first-born among many brethren"
11 In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. 12 And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; 13 the family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; 14 all the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart. Herein is the effectual, sovereign work of grace that separates out the LORD’S own, each one apart from another, even as many as HE shall call to Himself. ‘Not of of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, BUT of God.”
