Why was Lot in Sodom in the first place? There were no fellow-believers there with whom to worship. There was no prophet there to preach the Word of God. The people of Sodom were a terrible influence on his children and his own soul was vexed by the wickedness of the place. Why did he live there? I suppose for the same reason that many today live where they live. The wages were higher in Sodom. The fields were more fertile, and he had a fine farm with many cattle. He had invested many years and much labor in his business. He was too old to start over. I'm sure that before the angels came, Lot could have given many reasons why he could not leave Sodom. But out of the ashes of Sodom and the experience of the cave, Lot had different thoughts. What he would have given to turn back the clock and been able to live with Abraham and the people of God, even on 30 acres of mountainside land. The work of grace in the soul, in its very beginnings, penetrates deeply into its inmost substance. It wounds and lays open the conscience to the eye of infinite Purity and Holiness. "The entrance of thy words (that is, the very first entrance) giveth light." "The word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." All conviction to be true conviction must be thorough. The field must be ploughed, broken up, and furrowed, before the seed can find a tilth, a seed-bed for the seed to fall in so as to germinate and grow. There is much to be done in a sinner's heart before Christ can dwell in him by faith, or be formed in him the hope of glory. The heart is naturally very hard; thorns, thistles, and briars overspread its surface; the rank weeds of pride and lust have taken deep root; much grubbing up of these bosom sins, as well as of our inbred self-righteousness and fleshly holiness, creature strength and sufficiency, is needed to prepare us to receive a free grace salvation, separate us from the world and false professors, embitter to us the loved things of time and sense, and lay us suing for mercy at the foot of the cross. The first work, therefore, of conviction must be deep, or at least thorough, in order to make room for Christ and his salvation. And so it is with any manifestation or discovery of the Lord Jesus Christ, any application of his blood, any visitation of his presence, or shedding abroad of his love; these divine realities do not float upon the surface, but sink deep, and penetrate into his heart of hearts, into a man's inmost and deepest soul. How soon is all lost and forgotten, but what the blessed Spirit writes himself in the heart! People say, "How well we have heard!" but all is lost and dropped before they get home from the house of prayer. They read a chapter, close the Bible, and with it all they have read is closed too. Many have passing pangs of conviction, and passing desires, who give little proof of living under the Spirit's anointing’s. That divine Spirit does not let the saints of God off so easily. He holds them fast and firm to the work of conviction till he has slain them outright; and when he blesses he heals as deep as he wounds, and reveals the gospel as powerfully as he applies the law.

GOD’S FOUNDATION Isaiah 28:16
People are no different in Isaiah’s day than in ours. Religious lost men still love to brag and boast of their agreements, pledges, decisions and covenants they have made with death, hell and the grave. Therefore we need to constantly warn every one of the certain and eternal destruction of all those who rest in their refuge of lies (Isa.28:17-18). They willfully choose to disregard the only foundation on which the guilty sinner can find peace with God and go about to establish their own righteousness by their deeds (Rom. 10:1-4). Our Lord Jesus Christ is plainly set forth in scripture as the only provided and secure foundation upon which guilty sinners can rest and find peace with God (1 Cor.3:11; 1 Peter 2:2-7; 2 Cor.5:18-21).
Isaiah describes this foundation with great detail so that none will be misled or mistaken to trust a false christ. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the "tried stone." When He was manifested in the flesh as the sinner’s Mediator, He was tried, tested, and tempted in every aspect that a man could possibly be tested and yet he never failed (Heb. 4:14-15). He is also called the, "precious corner stone." He is precious to God the Father who sent Him to be the Saviour and Redeemer of His people (Matt. 3:17). He is also precious to those who trust Him as the only true refuge (1 Peter 2:7). Our blessed Lord put away our sin with His precious blood (1 Peter 1:18), granted us precious faith to fully trust Him (2 Peter 1:1), and has given to us His precious promises so that we might know more of this certain foundation. Isaiah also describes our Lord Jesus Christ as the, "sure foundation." I like things that are certain and sure. Nothing can be more certain and sure as that which God has provided for His people (Gen. 22:8). "The foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his" (2Tim 2:19). The certainty of this foundation is not us knowing Him, but rather Him knowing us (Rom. 8:29-30).
Those who are given life and grace to flee to the Lord Jesus Christ shall never be ashamed, will never be confounded and will never be forced out. Those who have trusted a false christ will be confounded and confused, especially on the day of judgment (Matt. 7:21-23). (Isa. 45:16-17).
My friend don’t be deceived, if you are trusting someone or something other than the Lord Jesus Christ alone, you are resting in that refuge of lies that Isaiah warned us about. Pray God that He would give you grace to trust Him alone and always for all of salvation (John 5:35; Acts 4:10-12).
