“A false witness shall perish: but the man that speaketh heareth constantly.” Proverbs 21:28

Before we examine this contrast, it may be helpful to define “constantly.” This word involves the concepts of sincerity and consistency. Solomon here returns to the common Biblical theme of conversation. Words matter because they are a window to our hearts and are an accurate descriptor of our hearts. Jesus said, “Out of the heart proceed….” The things we say are never disassociated from our heart’s desire. Therefore, a person becomes a false witness because the heart is compromised by ungodly desire. A false witness eventually loses all credibility. Their desire to look better by slanting the narrative in their favor ends up as a caricature. In contrast to the false witness is the individual who hears. In other words, this person considers each matter carefully. His responses are weighted by considering the effect of his words. His desires are not self-motivated; instead, he wants truth. As a result of hearing, his voice is heard. It can be counted on for consistency and truth. These thoughts may depress you because you have too often found yourself in the first category. Look to Jesus, the heart cleanser, the God of all grace, and the God who not only restores a sin-sick soul but can also restore reputation. I shared breakfast this morning with a man who is universally respected. As we discussed his life, it became apparent that his reputation once been in shambles. We tearfully rejoiced at a God whose power can clean the biggest messes.
