"The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not." Proverbs 21:25-26

In order to get the full picture of this passage, we are going to look at two verses. On the surface, the slothful are being contrasted with the righteous. However, as we look at what is actually being addressed, we find that it is the desire of the slothful and the righteous that are under consideration. We do what we do for a reason; everyone is trying to achieve something. Jesus gives us this principle in Matthew 6:19-24 with three sobering truths.

1. Everyone is seeking some kind of treasure (vs 19-20)

2. The treasure you are seeking will control your heart (vs 21)

3. Whatever controls your heart, dictates your behavior (vs 24)

It is not that the slothful are unmotivated, but that their motivation is being fueled by sinful influences. He is greedy for self-pleasure and ease, he covets what others have, yet his heart is so set on self-satisfaction, that he will not trouble himself to take the necessary means to obtain his desire in many areas. Again, the problem is not a lack of motivation, in reality; he is too motivated in achieving his ultimate desire for success and comfort without labor and toil. The old phrase is not too far off that says “Johnny works harder at getting out of work than he would if he were to simply complete the task at hand.” A life that is given over to sinful, selfish desires will produce death in many areas of life, including relationships, influence, joy, and ultimately physical death as well. It doesn’t have to be this way, and tomorrow we will see the contrast, as we look at the righteous, whose desires and behavior are influenced by a bigger treasure than themselves.
