Orwell and Bible Versions

I was looking at George Orwell's 1984 novel recently, for reasons that had nothing to do with religion, and the Appendix on "Newspeak" read like the preface to a modern dynamic-equivalence Bible version! I was quite stunned by how I reacted to it. I challenge Christians to read this Appendix and see how much it sounds like a modern Bible version's preface. Look at the points of similarity. I don't have time to list them all, but for example the limited vocabulary and range of expression. Newspeak is dumbed down for the specific purpose of making it incapable of thinking certain thoughts. Compare this to how many translations gut the Bible of words like "justification" and "atonement". Look at how Orwell says it is impossible to translate the opening of the Declaration of Independence into Newspeak, and try this with any Bible passage like Romans chapter 5. If you want more information on this, read Leland Ryken's book "The Word of God in English: Criteria for Excellence in Bible Translation" which goes into great detail about how dynamic equivalence.
